Fabric
Whenever I've made a doll, I have always received some wonderful
comments on the fabric. I also understand that it is somewhat difficult
for many miniature doll artists to find silk fabric. I am therefore
happy to be able to offer a variety of delightful Indian silks and
chiffons. These drape beautifully and I am sure you will be pleased with
the results.
Silk may be defined as a protein fiber made from the cocoon of the silkworm. When the silkworm begins its spinning, two filaments are emitted producing what is known as the
cocoon. Up to 1600 yards of thread can be reeled from the cocoon. It has been widely used for centuries to make fabric, yarn, or thread. The quality usually depend on the length of the filaments, sericin content, defects, and type of weave used. Silk is known for
it's softness,
luster and beauty.

Crepe Silk |
Beautiful, soft and thin fabric
that drapes wonderfully. It has a fabulous sheen that is impossible
for the camera to capture. |
|
Cotton Silk |
A unique blend of 50% cotton and 50%
silk. It has the shared characteristics of both these natural fibers and
is wonderful for costuming. |
|
Crushed Silk |
A wonderfully soft fabric with a
crinkly effect. This is absolutely perfect for those exotic Egyptian or
fantasy dolls. The fabric has a wonderful sheen. I wish it was available
in more colors. Use it by itself or in combination with the other
fabrics. |

Pure silk |
These soft fabrics drape beautifully
and are extremely suitable for costuming. They glue really well and
hang to form a realistic garment. The scans do not do these justice as
the colors have a beautiful sheen which I have been unable to capture in
the individual scans. |

Raw Silk |
Whilst most of us consider raw silk to
be thick and unsuitable for doll making, I was lucky enough to stumble
upon this Aladdin's cave of paper thin raw silk. A wonderful fabric
which glues and drapes beautifully. |
|
Tussah Silk |
Tussah silk is collected from the
tussah or wild silk worms that live in tropical forests. Since the
caterpillars eat different trees that are rich in tannin, the natural
color of the silk is beige or brownish toned. These fibers are then
woven into fabric and dyed. This is a paper thin silk with a crisp feel.
It drapes beautifully once slightly damp. Due to it's thinness, it is
perfectly in scale. |
Please remember that scans are
indicative of the colors but just do not do the depth, beauty and sheen
of the fabric justice. Although one can get an decent idea from the
scans, it may be difficult to specifically match something. I will be
happy to assist in the specific matching of two or more shades if
necessary.
Fabric sizes are as follows:

1/4 meter: 11" x 36"
